Playfold plays the audio files sitting in your folders. Point it at a folder and press play — there is no library to import, no database to maintain, and nothing to organize first.

Play a folder, not a library #

  • Pick a folder and go — play the audio files in a folder, or include everything in its subfolders, grouped in folder order.
  • Start from Finder — right-click any folder and choose Play with Playfold to begin playback straight away.
  • Stay in the menu bar — the icon reflects playing and paused state, and a left-click opens the whole player.
  • See what’s playing — track name and artwork sit at the top of the menu, using embedded artwork or a cover image found beside the file.
  • Scrub without leaving the menu — a compact seek bar shows elapsed and total time alongside the file type, bitrate, and size.
  • Shuffle and repeat — native menu toggles with checkmarks, applied to the current playback order.
  • Tidy as you listen — reveal the current file in Finder, or move it to the Trash and continue with the next track.
  • Launch at login — keep Playfold ready whenever you start your Mac.

A native macOS utility #

Playfold is a menu-bar-only app. It stays out of the Dock, follows the system’s light and dark appearances, and uses standard Mac menus, SF Symbols, and keyboard shortcuts. It works with VoiceOver.

Supported formats: AAC, AIFF, CAF, FLAC, M4A, MP3, and WAV.

Privacy #

Your music never leaves your Mac. Playfold has no account, analytics, advertising, or tracking, and it makes no network connections at all. It is sandboxed, and it can only read the folders you explicitly choose — write access exists solely so the current file can be moved to the Trash on your instruction. Playfold saves nothing to disk between launches. Read the full privacy policy.

Requirements #

Playfold requires macOS 14 or later.
